Social Assistance Recipient Support for Employment & Training (SARSET)

“Within your heart and spirit, you will find the keys to open any door.”

Our Goal:

The SARSET program was made possible through a partnership agreement made in March, 2000, between the Native
Council of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services.
SARSET is designed to assist the rural, urban, off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples of Nova Scotia who are in receipt of
provincial income assistance through DCS, currently on a fixed income or no income. To ensure SARSET is accessible
to eligible Aboriginal persons, the province is divided into five (5) regions. Each point of service is located in Sydney,
Truro, Dartmouth, Coldbrook and Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

How We Help:

SARSET’S main role is to assist Aboriginal participants in realizing and achieving their goals for employment, training
or upgrading by:

• Identifying with you, your needs and barriers while respecting and keeping confidentiality;

• Offering long term supports as needed to overcome barriers;

• Helping to develop and commit with you, a realistic plan to achieve success, by outlining your skills, assets and
barriers that may have influence upon employment and training opportunities;

• Informing you about training opportunities offered at community colleges, private career colleges, customized
industry training opportunities, universities, as well as, upgrading or pre-employment preparedness courses;

• Advocate on your behalf to access additional resources to achieve your goals;

• Ongoing supports and encouragement throughout the process;

• Assist in developing and updating resumes;

• Assist in interview preparation through coaching, mock interviews, providing interview tips and increase
confidence with the interview process;

• Making job referrals or advising you of current job opportunities;

• Gathering Labour Market information in order to assist in making a career choice, upskill current credentials or
consider a career change.
