Our Goal:
The Program was developed to assist rural off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples who are homeless or at risk for
homelessness that currently reside in rural areas of Nova Scotia. Our program objective is to assist individuals and
families to locate and sustain safe affordable housing & build partnerships with landlords throughout Nova Scotia.
How We Help:
• Housing Placement: Locate affordable, sustainable housing for Aboriginal individuals and their families
in distress. Negotiate present rent costs with landlords to ensure affordable housing;
• Housing Loss Prevention: Housing loss prevention is directed toward Aboriginal individuals and their
families who are at imminent risk of losing their housing and becoming homeless. In some cases it may be
necessary to re-house these individuals/families if their current rent costs exceed their financial budget;
• Client Support Services: Direct one-to-one confidential meetings with individuals/families to ensure
Aboriginal client’s immediate basic needs are being met. Refer clients to appropriate support systems that
will benefit their current situation, such as: community services, mental health agencies, food banks, and
support services offered within the Native Council of Nova Scotia. Programs & workshops will be offered
for life skills training, budgeting, as well as tenant and landlord obligations.
